In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
Through WLC 300, Spanish 301: Compositions and Oral Practice, Service Learning, Capstone, Spanish 302: the History and Structure of the Spanish Language, and Spanish 309: History and Politics of Latin America, I was able to obtain knowledge and understanding of the way of thinking as well as the history of Spanish speaking cultures. In Spanish 301, I was able to polish my Spanish speaking and writing skills through essays and presentations. I learned how to critically think in Spanish and create a solid argument in Spanish as well as analyze Spanish writings. In Service Learning I was able to connect with the Spanish speaking community through my service site at Camp Camphora. In the History and Structure of the Spanish Language, I learned about how the Spanish language has changed through out history and why it is the way it is today. We looked at the different influences as well as how those different cultures helped shape Spanish pronunciation. In the History and Politics of Latin America, I learned about Spanish speaking countries and how they have developed since they freed themselves from Spanish rule. The class looked at the effects history and politics has had on culture as well as the effect the United States has had on the hispanic countries. Even though my writing, speaking, and reading skills have improved, I would like to keep on practicing. These courses were just a brief introduction to the Spanish world. I wish to keep on learning about the politics, culture, and language of Spanish speaking countries. Through these courses I realized that I have much to learn. I want to continue my studies and receive my Masters in linguistics and translation because I realized that the only way to learn is to speak with native Spanish speaking people. I can only learn so much from books. I need real life experience as well as my studies in order to really grow as a Spanish speaker.
